How to use the working days and public holiday calculator
- 1Choose your dates
Set the start and end dates with the calendar or date fields. Both dates are included.
- 2Select a country
Pick the calendar that matches your public holiday region. Regional calendars use specific subdivisions.
- 3Review the count
Published provisional holiday calendars reduce the working-day count and mark listed dates on the calendar. Review the notice and official source before relying on future or regional dates.
This tool counts whole days only. It does not calculate leave entitlement or provide employment or legal advice.
HOW THE COUNT WORKS
Working days: definition and calculation method
A working day is a calendar day treated as a normal workday under the schedule and holiday rules selected for a particular purpose. A business day generally refers to a day when the relevant business or institution operates; the exact meaning can vary by country, employer, contract and public-service rules.
Webutiliti Working Days Calculator counts each date in the selected range, then applies your weekend and available public-holiday calendar settings. The calculator counts whole days, not hours or half-days.
Calculation steps
- Count every calendar date from the start date through the end date (inclusive).
- Remove dates that match your selected non-working weekend days.
- Where a published holiday dataset exists for the selected calendar and year, remove listed holidays that fall on otherwise-working weekdays.
- If “Exclude start date” is selected, remove the start date when it would otherwise count as a working day.
Calculation formula: working days = inclusive calendar days − selected weekend days − listed weekday public holidays − excluded start date (if applicable). A date is not subtracted twice if it is already a weekend.
Example: a Monday-to-Sunday week
| Measure | Count | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar days | 7 | Monday through Sunday, inclusive |
| Saturday and Sunday | 2 | Default weekend pattern |
| Weekdays before holidays | 5 | Seven calendar days minus two weekend days |
| Working days after holidays | 5 or fewer | Depends on listed public holidays in the selected calendar |
What changes the result?
| Setting | Effect on the count |
|---|---|
| Inclusive date range | Counts both start and end dates unless the start-date option is enabled. |
| Weekend pattern | Removes the weekdays you designate as non-working days. |
| Public holiday calendar | Removes listed holidays only when data is present for the selected region and all years in the range. |
| Start-date exclusion | Excludes the first date when it would otherwise be counted as a working day. |
Official holiday references by selected calendar
Holiday rules are jurisdiction-specific. These government and public-service sources are provided so you can check the applicable calendar; a source link does not mean every listed date has been independently verified in this calculator.
- India — Central (Delhi): Department of Personnel and Training official holiday information
- United States — Federal: U.S. Office of Personnel Management official holiday information
- United Kingdom — England and Wales: GOV.UK official holiday information
- Canada — Federal: Government of Canada official holiday information
- Australia — National: Fair Work Ombudsman official holiday information
- Germany — Nationwide: German federal and state holiday calendars official holiday information
- France — Metropolitan: Service-Public.fr official holiday information

For example, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management explains that “most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule” and publishes the federal holiday schedule. That schedule applies to the relevant federal employees; it is not a universal definition of a business day for every employer or jurisdiction. Read the OPM federal holiday schedule.
Holiday coverage and accuracy: This tool can display public holiday dates and adjust working-day totals for supported country, region and year combinations where a calendar dataset is available. The currently supplied generated holiday datasets are provisional and have not completed official-source review; estimated religious dates may change. If any year in the selected range is missing, holiday totals are marked unavailable rather than treating missing dates as a holiday-free year. Check the relevant government authority and your employer or contract before relying on a date for a consequential deadline.

Frequently asked questions about the Working Days Calculator
Are both dates included?
Yes. The start and end dates are included by default. Turn on “Exclude start date” to leave the start date out of the count.
Can I check public holidays with this working days calculator?
Yes. Select a supported country, region and date range to see public holiday dates when a calendar dataset is available for every year in that range. The currently supplied holiday datasets are provisional and still require official-source review; estimated religious dates may change. If coverage is unavailable for the selected region or year, the calculator clearly marks holiday results as unavailable.
Does the calculator subtract public holidays from working days?
When a holiday dataset is available for the full selected date range, listed public holidays that fall on working weekdays are removed from the working-day total. Weekends are not subtracted twice. If holiday data is unavailable, the result is a weekday/weekend count without holiday adjustments.
Which countries have public holiday calendars?
The country selector includes India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France and the United Arab Emirates, with available regional calendar choices. Holiday-data coverage varies by country, subdivision and year; check the result notice for the selected range.
Can I add business days to a date?
This version counts working days between a start and end date. Adding or subtracting a number of business days from one date is not available yet.
What does the country calendar change?
It selects the public holiday calendar. Weekend days can also be changed separately, including a custom set of non-working weekdays.
Are half-days counted?
No. This calculator counts whole working and non-working days. It does not count part-day schedules.
